FORT MYERS, Fla. -- Following the press conference to announce Jason Varitek's press conference at JetBlue Park Thursday, Varitek's agent, Scott Boras, told WEEI.com that he didn't allow other teams to make formal offers to the free agent catcher. The reasoning, according to Boras, was due to Varitek's continued allegiance to the Red Sox.
"I really didn't let them," the agent said when asked how many offers Varitek received in the offseason. "We got some interest calls, but really didn't follow it up too much. We didn't want to mislead anybody that he wasn't going to play for them."
The Red Sox had offered Varitek a minor league deal as an invitation to return, and the catcher reiterated at his press conference that he spent the entire offseason preparing as if he was going to come back.
Boras also discussed the plans of another one of his clients, J.D. Drew, who remains unsigned but hasn't announced whether or not he desires to continue his playing career.
"He's just home," Boras said. "He hasn't announced anything, but he's there. He hasn't made any decisions. He's home."
