Celtics stuck in low gear, lose to Pistons

In one of their worst performances of the season, the Celtics blew a winnable game and lost to the lowly Pistons, 98-88 at TD Garden.
Rajon Rondo scored a career-high 35 points and for the first time in his career he has scored 30+ points in consecutive games. But that was small consolation for the Celtics who missed 13 free throws.
Kevin Garnett missed his first game of the season with a strained hip flexor. His absence was felt on the defensive end as the Pistons shot 47 percent and center Greg Monroe had little trouble scoring 22 points on 11-for-14 shooting. Ben Gordon also had 22 points off the bench and scored 12 points in the fourth quarter.
Of the veteran stars who did play, Paul Pierce scored just two points in the first three quarters and Ray Allen didn't make his first shot from the floor until the final minute of action. Chris Wilcox did have 17 points and nine rebounds starting in place of Garnett.
The Celtics head to Chicago for a game with the Bulls on Thursday night and have a rematch with the Pistons on Sunday. They have played 19 of their first 28 games at TD Garden and are 11-8 at home. They won't return home until Feb. 29.
