Brad Penny takes the hill for the Boston Red Sox tonight against James Shields and the Tampa Bay Rays at Fenway Park. Both Jacoby Ellsbury and David Ortiz return to the Red Sox lineup and Julio Lugo is back in the field and at the bottom of the order, a day after batting leading off as the DH.
Kevin Youkilis remains out of the lineup however Terry Francona reports Youk is feeling "better, just not ready to play... he is really improved today, which is good". Francona also stressed they want to avoid placing Youkilis on the DL as the All-Star first baseman continues to do some rotational work - stepping up activity for the injury, which as described as Francona, is a "deep bruise that spasmed up on him".
Tito also noted that Ortiz is feeling better today and Baldelli feels good after playing last night for the first time coming off the DL. Other injury updates from Francona is that Mark Kotsay is improving and will travel with the team on the road trip. John Smoltz had a good day of throwing yesterday and will throw again tomorrow. Smoltz will then go to Florida on Monday, throw a side session on Tuesday, and perhaps inning or two in a game on Friday in Fort Myers.
