A source confirmed to WEEI.com that the Red Sox will meet with Brewers hitting coach Dale Sveum for a second-round interview about the team's managerial vacancy. News of Sveum's second-round interview was first reported by FoxSports.com and then confirmed by other outlets.
The initial report suggested that Sveum will meet with Sox GM Ben Cherington as well as members of the Sox' ownership group in Milwaukee this week, where both the GMs' and owners' meetings will take place. The Sox are also expected to meet with at least one additional candidate for a second-round interview.
Sveum served as the Red Sox' third base coach in 2004 and 2005. While he was often the target of criticism by Sox fans for his aggressive (and sometimes ill-fated) decisions to wave runners to the plate, he was widely respected by Sox players for his preparation, commitment and baseball acumen. For more on Sveum's reputation in the game and why he was viewed as a strong candidate for the Sox job, click here.
After his two years in Boston, Sveum accepted a job as third base coach of the Brewers, the team with whom he spent the biggest chunk of his big league career. In Milwaukee, he has been a third base coach, bench coach, hitting coach and he also had a unique stint as an interim manager, in which he took over the Brewers in mid-September of 2008 and helped guide them to a postseason berth on the final day of the year.
