Sox give Young permission to talk to A's

According to a source, the Red Sox have given Curt Young permission to talk to Oakland regarding the A's vacant pitching coach position. Young has one year left on his current deal with the Red Sox with a team option for 2013. As of Thursday afternoon, no decision has been made on Young's future, with either the Red Sox or A's.

It was reported by MLB.com earlier Thursday that the 51-year-old Young is the "top target" of the A's to replace Ron Romanick as Oakland's pitching coach, who served in the position with the A's from 2004-10.

WEEI.com previously reported that many of the Red Sox coaches had been given permission to seek employment elsewhere despite the fact that every member of Terry Francona's '11 staff still had at least one year left on their current contracts. Most of the coaches were told their fate with the Sox would be contingent on who the organization brought in as the new manager.
