Lavarnway helps Sox keep pace with Rays

BALTIMORE -- Making his first major league start at catcher, Ryan Lavarnway belted a pair of home runs in leading the Red Sox to a pivotal 8-7 win over the Orioles Tuesday night at Camden Yards. The victory helped the Sox keep pace with the Rays in the American League wild card standings, with Tampa Bay beating the Yankees, 5-3, in St. Petersburg, Fla.

The Red Sox and Rays now head into the their final games of the regular season, Wednesday, sharing identical 90-71 records. Jon Lester will face off against Orioles starter Alfredo Simon in the series finale, while Tampa Bay sends David Price to the mound against Freddy Garcia of the Yankees.

Besides Lavarnway -- who hit a three-run homer in the fourth inning and a solo shot in the eighth -- the Red Sox also got home runs from Jacoby Ellsbury and Marco Scutaro. 

Earning the win for the Sox was reliever Alfredo Aceves, who came on for starter Erik Bedard and allowed just one run on three hits over 3 2/3 innings. It improved Aceves' career mark to 24-4, and 10-2 this season. Bedard lasted 3 1/3 innings, giving up three runs on five hits while striking out six and walking three. The lefty threw 84 pitches, 48 of which were strikes.

Relievers Daniel Bard and Jonathan Papelbon added some excitement in the final two innings, with Bard surrendering a pair of runs and Papelbon allowing one score while leaving the potential game-tying run at second base thanks to a game-ending groundout by Adam Jones.
