Kalish had neck surgery Wednesday

Ryan Kalish underwent surgery on Wednesday to repair a bulging disc in his neck. He is expected to rest for 10 days and then begin a 6-8 week rehabilitation process.

Kalish tore the labrum in his left shoulder while making a diving catch in April and played just 22 games for Triple-A Pawtucket this season. While he was able to rehab that injury rather than undergoing surgery on it, he developed pain in the upper trapezius/neck muscle while trying to work his way back to the field. He did return from the injuries to play eight games for Pawtucket in August, but struggled (just a .448 OPS) and experienced soreness in the neck. The 23-year-old flew to Los Angeles in the last week of August for a consultation with orthopedist Dr. Robert Watkins, where it was determined that surgery would be needed. 

The outfielder played 54 games with the Red Sox in 2010, hitting .252 with a .710 OPS, four homers and 10 steals.
