TORONTO -- Red Sox manager Terry Francona said prior to his team's game against the Blue Jays Monday that Bobby Jenks, who has been recovering from strained intercostal muscles in his back, is most likely done for the season and will see back specialist Dr. Kirk Wood Wednesday.
Jenks was scheduled to perform in a rehab outing August 27, but experienced both an illness and continuing back pain, forcing the reliever to shut things down and be re-examined.
"I would say the chance of Bobby pitching, we're probably past that point now," Francona said. "He just couldn't get it going this weekend and now is probably the cut-off point. We're going to get him looked at one more time and see what they decide to do.
"He got sick and then he got sore. It's been one thing after the other. When we got back he wanted to take one more shot at it and it just wasn't happening."
Jenks hasn't pitched since July 7 and totaled just 15 2/3 innings in 19 games this season, totaling a 6.32 ERA.
"The role we envisioned never came to fruition for various reasons all year," Francona said. "We've tried to fill that role. Albers for the longest time just saved us, and Aceves almost in a different role, but those guys have picked up so much slack. But having a guy who can be reliable that's been through it and can pitch the seventh, eighth or ninth, lefties or righties, yeah, it's a big deal. But we haven't had it so it's not like we had two good months of it and now we have to replace it. We haven't had it."
