Middlebrooks headlines Sox AFL prospects
Third baseman Will Middlebrooks, the consensus top prospect in the Red Sox system, will headline a group of six Boston prospects who play for the Scottsdale Scorpions in the Arizona Fall League. He will be joined by pitchers Jeremy Kehrt, Will Latimer and Brock Huntzinger, along with catcher Dan Butler and outfielder Alex Hassan.
Middlebrooks is hitting .167 in 11 games since his promotion to Triple-A Pawtucket. He was named the top hitting prospect in the Double-A Eastern League after hitting .302 with a .345 OBP, .520 slugging mark, .865 OPS and 18 homers for Portland. Hassan, who hit a two-run homer for the Portland Sea Dogs in the Futures at Fenway, is hitting .296 with a .411 OBP, .463 slugging mark, .874 OPS and 12 homers in Double-A. Butler is hitting .211 with a .599 OPS in 18 games with the Sea Dogs since his promotion from High-A Salem, where he hit .247 with a .766 OPS and 11 homers.
Kehrt, a right-hander, is 4-1 with a 4.28 ERA between Double-A and Triple-A this year. Huntzinger is 5-11 with a 6.46 ERA for Portland, and Latimer is 1-0 with a 3.12 ERA for Salem and Portland.
All will be part of a Scottsdale team that will feature the highest profile prospects in the AFL. Both Nationals top prospect Bryce Harper and Angels prospect Mike Trout -- widely viewed as the top two prospects in the game -- will patrol the Scottsdale outfield. Highly regarded Angels catching prospect Hank Conger will also be on the team.
