Patriots coach Bill Belichick joined The Big Show on the season's first edition of Patriots Monday at Gillette Stadium, touching on a variety of topics as the Patriots prepare for their second preseason game Thursday in Tampa.
The Pats held Monday's practice session inside the practice bubble due to rain, though Belichick, who squirted footballs with water during the practice, said he would have rather been out in the rain. Ultimately, concerns over the well-being of the field won out and the session was moved indoors.
"I wanted to be outside, but was advised by our field guys that if we went out there we would probably be in the mud for the rest of the year, so we just sacrificed this one, but it hurt to go inside," Belichick said. "It really did."
A report from National Football Post suggested the Patriots could cut trade acquisitions Chad Ochocinco and Albert Haynesworth. Speaking on how Ochocinco has fit in, Belichick seemed pleased with the veteran wide receiver.
"Chad has worked really hard," Belichick said. "He has done everything that we have asked him to do. He is in excellent shape, he starts early, he stays late, he practices hard. It is a new offense for him, he has put in a lot of time and effort to work on it and get it down with the other receivers and Tom [Brady] with the coaching staff and [receivers coach] Chad O’Shea and [offensive coordinator] Billy O’Brien. He’s worked really hard and I’ve been impressed with what he’s done so far."
As for Haynesworth, who has been kept out of practice due to injury, Belichick said the defensive tackle's situation is being taken "day by day" and that he hopes the 30-year-old will soon return to the field.
"I think Albert has been great since he got here," the coach said. "He has worked hard, and done more than what we have asked him to do. He has put in a lot of extra time and extra effort to try and get back on the field, to study and catch up on things from a playbook standpoint that he is a little bit behind on. He is working hard to get back out there and I am sure he will be out there as soon as he can. We are looking forward to having him."
