He might have been a little hesitant at first but David Ortiz let it slip after Wednesday's 12-5 romp over the Royals that he believes this is the best Red Sox lineup he has ever been a part of, even better than the ones that he and Manny Ramirez helped power as the Sox won the World Series in 2004 and 2007.
“I’m about to say, yes, man," Ortiz said when asked point-blank about the historic numbers the Red Sox are posting. "I don’t want to say it too early. We still have two months left. But man, I’m telling you, what I’m seeing from head to toe, it’s what you really want to be part of.”
Ortiz blasted his 10th career grand slam in the five-run Red Sox fourth inning, giving him 1,000 RBIs with the Red Sox and giving him nine slams in a Red Sox uniform, matching Rico Petrocelli for second all-time. Ted Williams leads the way with 17. Ortiz is enjoying a revival this season as his teammates are in the process of putting on a historic offensive display.
Wednesday's win was the 16th time the Red Sox have reached double figures in a game this season, and the 11th straight at home with at least 10 hits, matching the 1921 club for third place in team history. The Red Sox, who are hitting over .300 as a team in posting an 18-4 mark in July, have 52 games with double figures in hits.
