Aceves shelled as Red Sox drop third straight

Red Sox starter Alfredo Aceves saw his 12-game winning streak (which dated to 2009) come to a crashing halt, as the right-hander endured the worst start of his career in a 10-7 loss to the White Sox.

Aceves gave up eight runs (six earned) in five-plus innings, doubling his previous career-high for runs allowed. He also set new career highs for hits allowed (8) and baserunners (11) as he saw his record drop to 2-1. He actually blitzed through the first inning in just seven pitches before his night quickly unraveled in the second. He gave up a leadoff walk and a soft single to right, then loaded the bases with a one-out walk. But the White Sox scratched out a four-run rally on a few dink hits -- a bounding RBI single through the hole into left field by Gordon Beckham, an RBI fielder's choice error committed by Jed Lowrie on another grounder into the hole, and a two-out, two-run single that was bounced up the middle by Alexei Ramirez.

The White Sox continued to add on, providing Chicago starter Phil Humber with a tremendous cushion. The right-hander -- a former No. 3 overall draft pick of the Mets and one of the players who went to Minnesota from New York in the Johan Santana deal -- attacked the strike zone and forced the Red Sox to swing early and often. Humber was overpowering at times, allowing just one run while scattering six hits and walking just one through his first seven innings of work.

The Red Sox finally got to Humber (4-3) in the eighth, when Josh Reddick (double), Drew Sutton (RBI single off the Wall) and Kevin Youkilis (single to left) all collected hits, setting the stage for David Ortiz to slam a three-run homer to left against reliever Will Ohman to trim the lead to 10-5. The Sox added on a pair of runs in the ninth, with Reddick (sac fly) and Sutton (double down the right-field line) both delivering run-scoring hits against Brian Bruney.

But with the White Sox having built up the huge lead, the late rally by the Red Sox fell short when Adrian Gonzalez went down looking on a slider from reliever Chris Sale.

The loss was the third straight for the Sox, who dropped one game behind the Yankees after New York won in Oakland.
