No more overtime.
No 4-on-4. No extended shootouts.
No, this time the Bruins effectively took care of business in just 60 minutes of hockey, rolling to a 4-1 victory over Tampa Bay at TD Garden Wednesday night.
Marco Sturm had two goals, and Marc Savard and Patrice Bergeron added single tallies as the Bruins earned their sixth victory in seven games, but just their second win in regulation over that stretch. Also assisting in the win was goalie Tim Thomas, who stood out with 39 saves.
Mark Recchi had three assists for Boston. Bergeron and Zdeno Chara added two each.
The win moved the Bruins past idle Buffalo back into first place in the Northeast Division.
“It’s been a while since we had a 4-0 lead after the second period,” Sturm said. “We wanted to be better at home and I think we did it.”
Things are clicking very nicely on Causeway Street as the Bruins now have earned standings points in seven straight and 12 of their last 13 games (8-1-4).
Here’s what stood out in the Bruins' most recent win:
THE CENTER OF ATTENTION WAS THE CENTER OF ATTENTION
After taking to the podium earlier in the day to discuss his new seven-year, $28.05 million contract extension, Savard wasted little time showcasing his hockey sense and ability to jump start the team’s offense.
Working on the B's first power play of the game, Savard circled behind the Tampa net and sent a backhand pass through the crease that deflected past goalie Mike Smith, giving Boston a 1-0 lead.
“I thought we came out hard, that was our goal tonight to really come out in the first period and get a lead,” Savard said, while admitting his goal was part good thinking, part broken play.
“To be honest with you, it was a bit of a fluky one,” Savard said. “I saw Michael [Ryder] was all alone in front of the net. I got a nice bounce off a skate.”
The goal was the 200th of Savard’s career and a nice way to end a significant day for him.
“It felt good, the Bruins are obviously putting a lot of faith in me,” he said. “You can’t reward it all in one night, but it felt good.”
CRASHING THE NET ATTACK PAID OFF
About eight minutes after Savard had scored, Bergeron raced to the net to keep a rebound of a shot by Chara alive in front of Smith and he swiped it around the sprawled goalie for a 2-0 Bruins lead.
The Bruins continued to force their way to the net with success in the second.
Sturm scored his first of the game, joining Recchi in crashing into the Tampa crease and forcing a loose puck past Smith 13 minutes into the period.
“We talked a lot about it, we practice it a lot, that’s where you get the goals,” Sturm said.
Just 1:23 later, Sturm drove the lane and tapped in a slick cross-crease pass from Bergeron off a rush, and Boston had a 4-0 lead.
“We’ve done it a lot in the past, so I knew he was going to rip it over to me and I just had to go hard to the net,” said Sturm, who collected his first multi-goal game of the season, with his seventh and eighth goals of the year.
TIM THOMAS IS BACK IN FORM
Thomas showed little lingering effect from his late game gaffe Saturday, in which he yielded an off-angle, game-tying goal to the Senators in the final 19 seconds of the third period.
Against the Lightning Wednesday, Thomas aggressively moved out of the crease to cut down angles early in the first and made a signature diving glove save to rob Jeff Halpern later in the period.
“I don’t think I played bad in the Ottawa game but for that one goal, but bouncing back with a strong game right after is very important,” Thomas said.
After making 27 saves in the first two periods, he lost his bid for a shutout when Halpern tucked in a loose puck in the crease 1:27 into the third.
“If you have one of those situations where you make a mistake or come up short, the best thing to do is to hop right back on the horse and have a strong game,” Thomas said.

Dale isn't buying the Tortorella hype and thinks he's a little overrated. DJ thinks he's a good coach, but isn't a fan of anti-media stance. The guys also talk about Jagr and how he has not lived up to the hype. They weren't expecting him to light it up or be the savior, but DJ says he wasn't prepared for just how slow the aging veteran is. Another big topic for B's fans this season is the play of Tyler Seguin and why he has yet to become the superstar everyone anticipates he will be. This leads to Claude Julien's style and if he does actually have something against the younger players. That Iginla trade shows its ugly head again as well.
