There was no eulogy to be delivered after the Bruins saw their 10-game winning streak halted by the Red Wings Friday afternoon at TD Garden, and for good reason. Just because they didn’t get two points means they suddenly resemble the 3-7-0 Bruins of Nov. 1.
On Friday, the Bruins had to deal with the sensational netminding of Maine product Jimmy Howard and the absurd skill of Pavel Datsyuk, among others, as they faced an elite team that was itching to be the first team to defeat the defending Stanley Cup champions in November. The Bruins still got a point out of it, as they battled back from a 2-1 deficit and went to overtime when Patrice Bergeron picked Henrik Zetterberg’s pocket and beat Howard with a wrist shot. Five minutes of 4-on-4 later, the Bruins, who entered the game 3-0 in shootouts, had the very tall task of taking on the supremely talented Red Wings in a shootout. Some fancy work from the likes of Datsyuk and Todd Bertuzzi gave Detroit the win, meaning there would be no 11th straight victory for the Bruins.
“I don’t think it’s the end of the world that it ended tonight. … There’s nothing wrong with the game we played tonight,” Claude Julien said after the loss. “I thought we were the better team out there. It’s unfortunate that sometimes those games get decided by individuals, and that’s what happened tonight. Having said that, we’ve won some games lately that maybe we didn’t necessarily deserve, and we found ways to win. That’s what they did tonight. They found a way to win.”
The reason the Bruins shouldn’t be downtrodden was made very clear Friday: While their winning streak is over, their stretch of winning hockey isn’t. The pairing of Dennis Seidenberg and Joe Corvo remained solid Friday, as they were the only two players on the ice for both of Boston’s regulation goals. Chris Kelly, who had two takeaways on his first shift Friday, continues to look like more than a third-line center. Tyler Seguin remains a threat every time he’s on the ice, and Tuukka Rask gave as impressive a performance as he has all season. There is certainly room for improvement (David Krejci was 2-of-12 at the dot Friday), but while the loss was the end of something incredible, it was by no means the start of something bad. The B’s will host Winnipeg Saturday as they try to prove that.
“Things are going well,” Shawn Thornton, who had three shots on goal Friday, said after the game. “We still played well tonight, so hopefully we can continue to bring that tomorrow and get another win tomorrow. Honestly, we got a point tonight, that’s points in eleven straight games. That’s pretty good as far as I’m concerned.”
Friday even saw the Bruins play a much, much better matinee than they’ve grown accustomed to playing. The Bruins’ 1-0 loss to the Avalanche on Oct. 10 was a rather drowsy affair, which wasn’t too dissimilar from some of their day games last season (losses to the Hurricanes, Penguins, Sharks and Rangers should come to mind). The B’s came out buzzing in the first period, outshooting Detroit, 13-6, despite the fact that the Red Wings held a 1-0 lead after 20 minutes of play. It wasn’t your typical Bruins’ matinee, but then again, their level of play of late hasn’t been too typical even for a defending champion.
Here are some quick notes on the Bruins’ 10-game streak now that it’s over:
- The Bruins began the month of November in last place in the Eastern Conference with six points. Their 10 straight victories (and overtime loss Friday) have propelled them to first in the Northeast Division and third in the conference.
- The Bruins were 2-0 in shootouts during their winning streak. They had two shootout wins all of last season and have three season.
- Tyler Seguin had 13 points to lead the Bruins over the 10-game game stretch.
- After going 0-3-0 in the first month of the season with nine goals allowed, Rask allowed six goals en route to winning all three of his November starts prior to Friday’s loss. Including the loss to the Red Wings, Rask has a 2.00 goals against average in the month of November.
- The Bruins scored at least five goals in the first five games of the streak, and scored five goals once, a 6-0 victory over the Islanders, the rest of the way.
- In a sign that the first goal isn’t everything, the Bruins scored the first goal in half of the games in their winning streak.
The B’s have an interesting schedule ahead as they try to keep their points streak alive and stay on top of what’s been a very competitive Northeast division. After Winnipeg, the Bruins will have a home-and-home with the Maple Leafs, who currently trail them by a point for the division lead. After that, the B’s will face the best team in the Eastern conference when they travel to Pittsburgh.
