The Bruins had only stopped reeking of cigar smoke and spirits for a few days when the time came for their brass to begin an offseason that at face value seemed straightforward enough. With two key players set to become unrestricted free agents and one restricted, a lot would have to happen for the Stanley Cup victors’ NHL roster to be glaringly different when the championship banner is raised on Oct. 6 at TD Garden.
By the looks of the haul the Bruins were able to net in this weekend’s NHL draft, it doesn’t seem the Bruins are ready to shake their fists at the hockey gods or lament a treacherous summer following their first Stanley Cup championship in 39 years. This offseason will be monitored by fans in Boston just as much as it was last year, but it will have a fraction of the drama that fans saw last June and July, when fans eagerly awaited a solution to what had kept the team from getting out of the second round and saw different rumors about Tim Thomas and Marc Savard pop up hourly.
Though the Bruins, like last year, held a high pick in the first round of this weekend’s draft, there was no buzz about how the selection would be the missing piece to the Bruins’ puzzle. There was no city-wide debate over who the pick should be. Naturally, that is partially a result of the difference in hype between the second overall pick and the ninth choice, but there wasn’t even a trace of a Dougie vs. Sean vs. Ryan debate to follow the famous Taylor vs. Tyler circus of 2010.
When the draft kicked off, the B’s, as they did last year, let the chips fall and took the best player available to them. The Bruins went defense first before making a run on forwards in the second, third and fourth rounds and then finishing with a high school defenseman and a Norwegian goaltender. The prize of the crop is undoubtedly Niagara (OHL) 18-year-old Dougie Hamilton, a stud of a blueline prospect who figures to play a big game once he fills out his 6-foot-4 frame.
There is no rush to get him to the NHL, so on the off chance that anyone missed Tyler Seguin’s “if I make the team” quip attached to every answer from rookie camp to late October, it doesn’t seem the first-rounder will be delivering such a line this year. In reality, that’s just fine.
Now consider that there’s a very good chance Hamilton will be the biggest name added by the Bruins this offseason, and no, that probably won’t change any of his travel arrangements back to Niagara following camp. The Bruins have the luxury of not needing major additions. They need the same core group that brought them the Cup, and they’ll have it. They also need the same guys who found a way to have a decent power play for most of the regular season to figure it back out. Aside from that, one can’t expect this offseason to be about preaching change or mixing things up. The B’s obviously want the same result, so it’s hard to imagine them messing with the formula.
In Brad Marchand’s case, it’s only a matter of how much money the B’s throw his way. The restricted free agent’s been qualified by the team already, meaning they can match any offer sheet to which he’s signed. Given that he embodies a lot of what the B’s are about – solid two-way play and aggression (the latter despite his size) – and the fact that the B’s figure to have some money to play with, none of the thousands who bought No. 63 shirts during the team’s Cup run should fret.
As for Michael Ryder and Tomas Kaberle, nothing would be surprising, and keeping both on short deals might be the best-case scenario. With Seguin a year better, letting him stay with Ryder, the player with whom he has the best on-ice chemistry, can only be a good thing. Of course, the B’s would have to live with what Ryder generally brings: a little in the regular season and a lot in the postseason. The Bruins are pot-committed to Kaberle, so if they can get him for less than $3 million a year, it might soften the sting of the large package they parted with to land him.
Outside of that, don’t expect anything huge. The Bruins have guys they can win with, and now they’ve added a good crop of prospects to make sure the future remains bright. The Bruins didn’t move around in the draft, and after getting what seems to be quite the steal in Hamilton, they didn’t have to do anything that jumped off the page.
It could be years before any of the names called this weekend play in Boston, and that shouldn’t be a concern for the Bruins. The B’s could make minimal changes to their NHL roster, and it shouldn’t be a concern. It isn’t about turnover or change this time. This summer, Bruins fans can think about the Cup – and not the players – changing locations.
