Give me some names.
Sorry?
I’m in the finals. I need to win. And I don’t want to hear about Matt Forte and Jay Cutler. Stop living off those guys.
No problem. I’ve got a lock for 100 yards and a TD Sunday.
I like it. Just don't give me Lance Moore. Three weeks in a row you've hyped him and he has a whopping 10 catches for 77 yards combined.
No problem. Well, a little problem. I really like Lance Moore this week.
I'm out. Thanks. Time to read Funston and Berry.
Listen, I understand he's been shaky the past three weeks. But this is a great play. I'd load up on all viable options in the Lions-Saints game this week. Pierre Thomas, Marques Colston, Moore, Jeremy Shockey should all produce for the Saints (Lions have allowed league-worst 444 points). And Drew Brees is the single best QB option for the week (duh). Moore should be good for 70-80 yards and a TD. I think this game is 38-35 (and I have a sneaky feeling the Lions get the win) and Calvin Johnson will lead all WR with 150 yards receiving for the week.
Oh, I should play Drew Brees? Thanks. Is this the fantasy picks the guys on the ESPN pregame game show make? Maybe I should start Adrian Peterson over Heath Evans. C'mon, give me a solid QB sleeper.
I'm down on Tony Romo and Kurt Warner this week, but I understand if you start them. Romo’s clearly has some health issues and faces a brutally tough Baltimore defense Saturday night (which is still a strange night for football. For me, Saturday night on TV will always be Rose, Blanche, Sophia, Dorothy and cheesecake. For you younger readers, I’m talking about a little show called “Cop Rock”. ), but he has been great at home (17 TDs and a 109.3 rating in six games). I’m just not sure he makes it through this game. Tough to play in a fantasy title game with a QB that could leave in the first quarter.
Same deal with Warner. Sure, the Pats D is shaky vs. the pass, but a combination of bad weather and no need for Arizona to win this game leads me to believe that we may see plenty of Matt Leinart on Sunday. That gives him a week off before a nice home game against Seattle to finish off the regular season.
A sleeper? Guess Matt Cassel doesn’t qualify, but I like him again this week. The weather will be a factor, but he was fine last week in lousy conditions. The Cardinals rank 27th in points allowed and seem ripe for a blowout loss. I think Cassel, Moss, Welker, Faulk and Morris are all good starts this week (I’m not ready to throw Jordan in the mix yet.)
How about Shaun Hill? He gets the Rams this week (24th vs. the pass), a team that Hill handled in Week 11 (two TDs, 142.3 passer rating). Plus you’ve got the Mike Martz in St. Louis factor. I think another two-TD game is easily within reach. Hill, by the way, is owned in just 20 percent of Yahoo! leagues (Carson Palmer is owned in 27 percent). If Frank Gore is out again this week DeShaun Foster is a nice flex start.
Any big names out this week?
Keep an eye on Anquan Boldin. He hasn't practiced this week (shoulder) if he's out Sunday it would be a HUGE blow to Boldin owners. You have to think that Cardinals, already locked in as the four seed in the NFC, would be likely to sit Boldin. If that is the case Steve Breaston becomes a major factor. He caught 15 passes for 179 yards and a TD in the two games Boldin missed earlier in the season, and it's not hard to imagine a 100-yard game vs. the Pats D Sunday. Breaston is available in nearly a third of Yahoo! leagues and is a must-add at this point.
Just re-read your Predictions column from the preseason. To be more accurate, I should say that I looked at the first prediction and learned once again that you are truly a moron. I then watched Fitzy and laughed and laughed.
You mean this didn’t happen?
Jon Kitna will throw more TD passes than either quarterback in NY. (He’ll toss 26, Favre 24 and Eli 20.)
Fine, there were some whiffs in there, but how about the hits? Matt Forte and Jerod Mayo as Rookies of the Year. Kerry Collins will replace Vince Young. No 1,000-yard season for Larry Johnson. Jay Cutler as a top-five QB. Fitzy as the best part of the new Weei.com.
And how about this one? Remember, this was on September 12th.
Mickey Rourke (yep, that Mickey Rourke) will land an Oscar nomination for his lead performance in Darren Aronosfky’s “The Wrestler”.
How many of you had even heard of “The Wrestler” at that point? Of course, when you are writing a fantasy football column and your best prediction concerns the Oscars it may be time to give up the clarinet. But I’m still proud. And in a way, I believe this justifies my dressing up as Leonard Maltin for Halloween in 1982.
I noticed you’ve given up on picking waiver-wire defenses. I think that’s best for everyone.
Yeah, it hasn’t been good. That Week 12 Buffalo recommendation is one I’d like back (they gave up a mere 54 points to the Chiefs).
Again, the two things I flat-out stink at are selecting defenses and Guessing That Ass on barstoolsports. I even missed that Helen Mirren one a few weeks back, and that was a layup. I need an easy Kim Kardashian shot to get my swing back.
I don’t know, maybe Houston at Oakland? Just an anti-Raiders play (one more full season before we can start with the “is JaMarcus Russell a bust” stories?).
Good luck in the finals (or in the third-place game or consolation championship). Remember, don’t be afraid to bench a “star” with a bad matchup (Marion Barber, if he plays) for a lesser player with a great matchup (DeShaun Foster). And that is one to grow on.

Cleveland Indians hottest team in baseball, yet remain last in attendance May 19, 2013 By AJ Kaufman 6 Comments There’s a scene in Major League where Bob Uecker, portraying the radio voice of the Indians, bemoans, “In case you haven’t noticed, and judging by the attendance you haven’t, the Indians have managed to win a few here and there, and are threatening to climb out of the cellar.” Well, that was nearly 25 years ago and fictional, but today’s reality is that Cleveland has won 17 of its last 21, and currently tops the AL Central with a mark of 25-17. No one in the majors is better than the Indians in the past month (20-7). That’s great news. The bad news, however, is the Tribe somehow remain in the MLB cellar when it comes to attendance. How can this be? The fact that I wrote on this same topic almost to the day last year – when only Tampa Bay drew fewer fans than Cleveland - may be even more troubling. Though roughly 34,000 watched a walk-off win Friday night against Seattle, perfect weather and free caps weren’t enough to draw more than 36,000 Saturday and Sunday combined. What did the Indians do in those tilts? They nabbed another walk-off win on Saturday, then the Indians crushed the great Felix Hernandez Sunday behind Justin Masterson, arguably the AL’s best pitcher right now. Fun fact: The Indians have already faced eight Cy Young Award winners in 2013: Bartolo Colon, R.A. Dickey, Roy Halladay, Cliff Lee, Jake Peavy, David Price, Justin Verlander and Hernandez. They have won seven out those eight matchups. Simply astounding. This offseason, the much-maligned Indians front office finally made a legitimate attempt to improve the team through free agency. I’m not talking an Ubaldo Jimenez-like trade, but rather smart acquisitions that brought veterans Mike Aviles, Michael Bourn, Jason Giambi, Scott Kazmir, Brett Myers, Mark Reynolds, Drew Stubbs and Nick Swisher to Cleveland. In addition to being a fantastic place to watch a game due to great egress and ingress, with extremely affordable tickets, the best promo lineup anywhere, Jacobs Field boasts overall, cooler, less muggy summer weather than most Midwestern locales. The team also lowered beer and hot dog prices to $4 and $3 respectively. What other professional stadium in any sport offers that? I have visited 28 of the 30 current Major League Baseball stadia, and few top The Jake when all angles are considered. I say that as a baseball fan, not an Indians fan. As for the putative “economic” angle, these are the same people who spend insane amounts of money to watch terrible football every fall and show up in decent numbers for putrid basketball in the winter. Irrespective of season length, those sports charge up to 10 times the price for a ticket, and the atmosphere isn’t half as fan-friendly as baseball. I understand fans’ lack of willingness to get on board to some degree. A decent recap of Cleveland’s decade of “rebuilding” can be read here and the team suffered a horrific collapse last August. However, in addition to all the benefits of attending games at Jacobs (now Progressive) Field, fans should also realize the team has potential and often exceeds preseason aspirations at any point without warning. Cleveland hosts the rival Detroit Tigers — heavy favorites to repeat as AL Central champs — Tuesday and Wednesday nights before hitting the road. The temperature should be pleasant at first pitch each evening so you’d expect The Jake to be full to watch the best hitter on the planet right now — but don’t count on it.
