Twenty-four hours after the news of Tom Brady’s extension was announced, more contract details are starting to leak out. At this point, here’s what we know, according to multiple reports and different sources:
2013: Salary-cap figure of $13.8 million, base salary of $1 million (fully guaranteed).
2014: Salary-cap figure is $14.8 million, base salary of $2 million (fully guaranteed).
2015: Salary-cap figure is $13 million, base salary of $7 million (guaranteed for injury only -- it becomes fully guaranteed if he’s on the roster for the last game of the 2014 regular season).
2016: Salary-cap figure is $14 million, base salary of $8 million (guaranteed for injury only -- it becomes fully guaranteed if he’s on the roster the last game of the 2014 regular season).
2017: Salary-cap figure of $15 million, base salary of $9 million (guaranteed for injury only -- it becomes fully guaranteed if he’s on the roster the last game of the 2014 regular season).
In the day since it was first announced, it’s raised a few other things that are worth discussing:
Time to go shopping: While the restructured deal should allow the Patriots to get Wes Welker signed to a long-term contract, it also theoretically allows New England to wander into the free agent market with a few more bucks than they previously thought. Things can change between now and the start of free agency -- and there’s no guarantee that they spend the money this year as opposed to next -- but there will likely be some big-name prospects available to New England, including wide receivers Dwayne Bowe, Mike Wallace and Anquan Boldin (although Boldin maintains that if he isn’t in the Ravens plans down the road, he’s going to retire), as well as safety Ed Reed and linebacker Paul Kruger. In addition, there’s the possibility of any one of these under-the-radar free agents, individuals like defensive lineman Mike DeVito and cornerback Brent Grimes could be had for relatively good value once free agency begins next month.
Revisiting the market for Ryan Mallett: With Brady now set to be a Patriot for life, it raises significant questions about the future of Ryan Mallett in New England. The 24-year-old quarterback is under contract for the next two seasons, but in this quarterback-hungry environment, he's the most attractive trading chip that the Patriots have. He would come significantly cheaper than Alex Smith and Matt Flynn -- two other backups who figure to be on the market this offseason -- and his limited professional experience could give him an advantage over the crop of quarterbacks in this year’s draft class. Mallett’s lack of professional experience is certainly a hindrance, but in this market, you can always sell someone on the idea of hope, especially when that hope comes in the form of an inexpensive quarterback who threw for more than 8,000 yards in two-plus seasons in college. (For more on possibly dealing Mallett, check out my story from last week here.)
The Manning-Montana effect: This doesn't have much to do with the future for the quarterback or the team, but it's worth exploring. While there’s the possibility Brady will call it a career sometime before the contract runs out, the deal pretty much cements the fact that he will remain a Patriot for the rest of his playing career, and it begs the question: How much was Brady affected by the sight of Peyton Manning being forced to start all over again last season with the Broncos? (As well as, to some extent, the fact that his childhood idol Joe Montana had to go through the same thing in his late 30s when he transitioned from the 49ers to the Chiefs at the age of 37.) The money, the infrastructure and the stability are all nice, but the comfort level and familiarity that exists between Brady and the franchise (particularly between the quarterback and the coach) can’t be replicated. For any quarterback who has been lucky enough to play into his mid-30s with one team, the idea of starting all over again in a new city, with new coaches, new teammates and a new locker room isn’t an appetizing idea. This new deal should prevent him from going anywhere else as a player.
The window: Again, while it’s not a guarantee that he plays to the end of the contract, but it’s reasonable to think that at the age of 40, he’s going to decide to walk away. That would seem to put a decisive timeline on “the window” that people keep talking about in relation to how long he (and presumably, the coach) will be able to stick around. That would give the Patriots another five seasons with the quarterback. In that stretch, it will be interesting to see if New England decides to tweak its traditional team-building approach -- in years past, the Patriots always maintained a staunch long-term plan, always balancing any short-term fixes with a desire for sustained excellence. Knowing that Brady now has a limited amount of time left, do they abandon that approach and go more short term?
