You’ve read the draft annuals and memorized what Mel Kiper, Jr. and the rest of the analysts have to say when it comes to who might be on the Patriots’ radar for the first few rounds. But how is the rest of New England’s draft board going to look? With some help from Evan Silva of Pro Football Talk, here are 11 mid- to late-round possibilities Patriots fans should get to know:
1. Alabama QB Greg McElroy: Going on the theory that you should pick up a quarterback in the late rounds or as an undrafted free agent every years — something the Patriots have done regularly under Bill Belichick — you could a lot worse than go after McElroy if he's available on the third day of the draft. Schooled by former Belichick assistant Nick Saban, McElroy’s accuracy (he completed 61 percent of his passes in 2009, and had a string of 141 pass attempts without an interception as a junior), ability to take care of the ball (37 touchdowns and nine picks the last two seasons) and the fact that he’s a proven winner (he was under center when Alabama won it all in 2009) could all make him a good fit for the Patriots as a backup to Tom Brady.
2. Oregon WR Jeff Maehl: The Patriots love their agile wide receivers, and Maehl’s time in the 3-cone drill at the combine — 6.42, best among all the wide receivers — likely landed him on New England’s radar. At 6-foot and 181 pounds, he’s not the biggest receiver available, which could cause some teams to pass. But Maehl has a great story —originally recruited by the Ducks as a defensive back, he made the conversion to wide receiver late in his freshman year and ended his career at Oregon with 24 receiving touchdowns, tied for the most in school history. He’s certainly not a deep threat, but appears to be the sort of smart, nimble-footed receiver the Patriots usually covet.
3. Tennessee-Chattanooga DB Buster Skrine: Like Maehl, Skrine’s agility is a large part of what could ultimately draw him to New England — his 3-cone time at the combine was 6.44, best among all defensive backs. A small-school star, there are questions as to whether or not he could succeed at the next level, which could make him available to the Patriots late in the second day of the draft. While New England appears set on the outside, Skrine could see time immediately in the slot. In addition, the 5-foot-10, 186-pounder has some special teams experience as a kick returner. (WEEI.com confirmed Skrine had a private workout with the Patriots.)
4. Boston College LB Mark Herzlich: Herzlich’s amazing comeback story has been well chronicled on this site, but the fact remains that he’s the sort of high-character individual with a maturity and high football IQ who would be a good fit for the New England locker room. Despite the fact that he is now cancer-free, Herzlich will likely still face questions from teams about his long-term health and durability, prompting him to slide. As a result, he could land with the Patriots on either the second or third day of the draft.
5. Maryland TE Will Yeatman: The Patriots certainly don’t need a tight end, but Yeatman could intrigue the lacrosse-loving Belichick for several reasons, not the least of which is his background as a college lacrosse player. (The 6-foot-7, 275-pound Yeatman did play some college football at Notre Dame for former Belichick assistant Charlie Weis was there before he was charged with misdemeanor counts of drunken driving and criminal recklessness and transferred to Maryland.) He didn’t put up great numbers as a collegian, but Yeatman seems to be the perfect sort of “project player” New England could take a chance on with a seventh-round pick.
6. Wisconsin G/C Bill Nagy: A part-time starter the last three seasons with the Badgers, he’s not considered an elite lineman, but Nagy’s versatility could land him in New England on the third day of the draft. Belichick has always coveted offensive linemen who can play more than one position, and the 6-foot-3, 318-pounder has played guard, center and tight end at a high level as a collegian.
7. West Virginia NT Chris Neild: A Mountaineer captain who was given a leadership award by the WVU coaching staff as a junior, the 6-foot-2, 319-pound Neild could be the latest example of the Patriots going after players who were college captains. (They drafted five last season.) Considered a high-character overachiever, the well-respected Neild isn’t a classic nose tackle, but has survived to this point on what one pre-draft publication calls “a gritty, bulldog mentality.” In addition to his leadership abilities, he was an invaluable on-field presence — a three-year starter at nose, he was first-team All-BIG EAST as a senior.
8. Fresno State QB Ryan Colburn: Belichick has drawn from Pat Hill’s program on several occasions the last few years (Logan Mankins, James Sanders, Ryan Wendell), and if they’re looking for a late-round or undrafted prospect, Colburn could be a fit. The 6-foot-3, 218-pounder was named to the all-academic All-WAC team, and at the combine, came across as extraordinarily mature in his session with the media. A southpaw with good foot speed, he was a two-year starter with Fresno State who threw for 2,817 yards, 23 touchdowns and nine interceptions as a senior while completing 63 percent of his passes.
9. Fresno State ILB Ben Jacobs: Like Colburn, he’ll be helped by the fact that he’s played in a program run by a former Belichick lieutenant in Hill. A four-year starter for the Bulldogs, he led Fresno in tackles each of the last three seasons. Considered excellent in run defense, the 6-foot-4, 239-pound Jacobs lacks the speed to work in pass coverage, but has proven himself as a quality defender on first and second down.
10. Oregon DT Brandon Bair: He’ll likely slip because he’s 26 — he spent two years on an LDS mission between high school at the start of his playing career at Oregon — but Bair is considered by NFL Network analyst Mike Mayock as “the ideal developmental 5-technique.” The 6-foot-6, 274-pounder was inside for the bulk of his college career, but likely projects as a defensive end in the NFL, as long as he gains a few pounds.
11. Marshall ILB Mario Harvey: Historically, New England has done well with talented overachievers who have a chip on their shoulder because they feel like they’ve been overlooked, and the undersized (5-foot-11, 250 pound) Harvey went through his college career with plenty of doubters. That attitude paid big dividends for him at Marshall, as he finished his college career as the fifth-leading tackle in school history with 420. He wasn’t invited to the combine, but reportedly drew the attention of the New England representatives who saw him work out at Marshall’s Pro Day.
