Tom Brady underwent successful surgery on his right foot Thursday at Massachusetts General Hospital on Thursday, and according to several reports, is doing well.
The quarterback had surgery to relieve a stress fracture in his right foot, one that had hobbled him over the course of the 2011 season. Medical experts have indicated that, for a surgery of this nature, a rehab of roughly three months is par for the course.
The surgery’s completion was first reported by Comcast SportsNet New England.
Noted sports injury expert Will Carroll compared the situation Brady faces to the one that Red Sox second baseman Dustin Pedroia underwent late year.
“This one’s double-duty — if it is a Navicular fx (and pretty much all sources say it is) — then you’re looking at the same thing Pedroia had done,” wrote Carroll in an e-mail exchange with WEEI.com. “They’ll make sure it’s lined up, put in a pin or screw if needed, and it should take a couple months to be 100 percent. Just as I don’t expect Pedroia to have any issue once he comes back after letting it heal in the offseason, I doubt Brady will have any issue being ready for training camp.
“The only issues he might have are some residual pain, arthritis, and similar. He’s not mobile to begin with, so I don’t think we have to worry about foot geometry changes.”
It is the fifth surgery for the 33-year-old Brady, who acknowledged at the start of the 2010 season that he went under the knife for work on his shoulder, groin and knee, as well as one other one he did not disclose. He also finished up last season with a variety of injuries, including a rib injury and a broken right ring finger.
Going forward, if Brady is indeed looking at a three-month rehab, that would have him ready by mid-April. The Patriots begin offseason workouts in mid-March and hold rookie minicamps the week after the NFL draft. The biggest post-surgery milestone for Brady would likely come at the start of the organized team activities, which began in late May in 2010 and ran for roughly three weeks. (In most cases, the OTA’s run for a few weeks, with veterans usually reporting during the second week.) The second milestone would come in mid-June, when the team holds its mandatory minicamp.
The first inclination the quarterback was suffering from a foot problem this season came midway through the season — his name first popped up on the injury report with a right foot injury on Nov. 10, the Wednesday before the Patriots faced the Steelers in Pittsburgh. From that point on, he missed several Wednesday practices over the course of the season, but he did not miss a single game over the course of the 16-game season.
Despite the fact that Brady apparently played the bulk of the season on the bad foot, it didn’t hinder his production. The quarterback enjoyed one of the best seasons of his career, finishing with 3,900 passing yards, 36 touchdowns and only four interceptions, and is the favorite to win his second NFL MVP award.
