Here’s what we know so far: Celtics head coach Doc Rivers has conceded homecourt advantage to Cleveland. “We’re not going to catch Cleveland,” he said last week. After suffering through injuries, the Celtics are now fighting with Orlando for second place in the East. Is it possible they could catch the Cavs for first? If any team should realize “anything is possible,” it’s the Celtics.
As of right now the first three spots in the East are still up for grabs, and that means the Celtics could potentially face the sixth, seventh, or eighth ranked team. While most of the attention has been focused on which seed the Celtics will earn, what we don’t know is who they will face in the first round of the playoffs. The answer changes every day. As the season nears an end, there are a handful of teams who are in the mix for the final three spots.
(Standings as of March 22)
Philadelphia 76ers (35-33)
Current seed: Sixth.
They survived the firing of Mo Cheeks and the season-ending injury of Elton Brand. Now the Philadelphia 76ers have their sights set on the playoffs. Without Brand, the Sixers can get out and run an up-tempo style that can cause problems for the C’s. The 76er are not unbeatable, but they are the type of team to tire out a Celtics squad that has desperately been trying to manage minutes.
Team Leaders:
Scorer: Andre Iguodala (18.1 points)
Rebounder: Samuel Dalembert (9.1 rebounds)
Ball handler: Andre Miller (6.5 assists)
Detroit Pistons (34-35)
Current seed: Seventh.
The once-perennial title contender has been sliding all season. However, this struggling Detroit team did defeat the Celtics in Boston, and there is no discounting their championship experience. There is still a chance the Pistons could shake up the rankings and secure a higher seed among those fighting for a postseason bid. They face the Philadelphia 76ers, Chicago Bulls and New Jersey Nets twice, as well as the Charlotte Bobcats, New York Knicks, and Indiana Pacers before the start of the playoffs.
Team Leaders:
Scorer: Richard Hamilton (18.1 points)
Rebounder: Antonio McDyess (9.18 rebounds)
Ball handler: Allen Iverson (5.1 assists)
Chicago Bulls (32-38)
Current seed: Eighth
When asked this month whether the Chicago Bulls would be ready if the playoffs started at that moment, Kirk Hinrich answered, “Right now, no.” Their recent win over a hobbled Boston lineup was another milestone in their inconsistent season. Win two, lose three, win three, lose again. The Bulls have to find a way to play at a high level for the next month if they want to earn a playoff bid. Even if they do, piecing together a postseason series will be a challenge.
Team Leaders:
Scorer: Ben Gordon (20.4 points)
Rebounder: Brad Miller (7.9 rebounds)
Ball handler: Derrick Rose (6.1 assists)
Charlotte Bobcats (31-39)
Current seed: One game out of the eighth spot.
Gerald Wallace, Emeka Okafor, Boris Diaw ... the pieces are there. The wins, on the other hand, are not. The Bobcats are one of the most disappointing teams in the Eastern Conference, and are often overlooked in playoff discussions. However, this season, they are creeping up on the eighth seed. Their lack of depth on the bench does not make them a threat pull off an upset, but the level of talent in their starting lineup should be enough to make a legitimate run at the playoffs.
Team Leaders:
Scorer: Gerald Wallace (16.7 points)
Rebounder: Emeka Okafor (10.3 rebounds)
Ball handler: Raymond Felton (6.8 assists)
Milwaukee Bucks (31-40)
Current seed: 1.5 games out of the eighth spot.
Last week, they beat the Celtics and reclaimed the eighth spot in the East. This week they have slipped 1.5 away from the playoffs. Milwaukee has to play Orlando twice and the Lakers before they can plan for the postseason. If Andrew Bogut does not return from his back injury, the Bucks may be returning to the lottery yet again.
Team Leaders:
Scorer: Richard Jefferson (18.8 points)*
Rebounder: Andrew Bogut (10.3 rebounds)
Ball handler: Luke Ridnour (5.3 assists)
*Michael Redd led the team with 21.2 ppg before suffering a season-ending knee injury.
New Jersey (30-40)
Current seed: 2 games out of the eighth spot.
The Nets have the toughest remaining schedule out of the teams vying for the eighth spot — home games against the Lakers and Orlando, and battles against the Celtics and Cleveland on the road. The Nets are trying to stay alive without Devin Harris (shoulder), but their postseason hopes may come to an end before he returns.
Team Leaders:
Scorer: Devin Harris (22.6 points)
Rebounder: Brook Lopez (7.9 rebounds)
Ball handler: Devin Harris (7.0 assists)
Indiana Pacers (29-42)
Current seed: 3.5 games out of the eighth spot.
Another season of injuries has stifled Indiana. From Danny Granger to Mike Dunleavy to Marquis Daniels, they have not been able to play at full force. If Granger had stayed healthy the Pacers may have been in the mix for a postseason bid. However it may be too late for this All-Star to dig his team out of a 3.5-game hole.
Team Leaders:
Scorer: Danny Granger (24.8 points)
Rebounder: Troy Murphy (11.8 rebounds)
Ball handler: T.J. Ford (5.2 assists)
New York Knicks (28-41)
Current seed: 3.5 games out of the eighth spot.
New York has spent this season on a roller coaster. Its wins over the Celtics, New Orleans and San Antonio have been contrasted by a pair of six-game losing streaks, and losses to Sacramento and Oklahoma City. It’s been said that the teams who get hot in April are the ones who succeed in the playoffs. If that’s the case, the Knicks could either make a late-season comeback or wind up back in the lottery.
Team Leaders:
Scorer: Al Harrington (20.6 points)
Rebounder: David Lee (11.9 rebounds)
Ball handler: Chris Duhon (7.4 assists)
