In the last 10 years over 115 international-born players have been selected in the NBA Draft. The Boston Celtics have drafted three in the second round. Of those, none have ever suited up for the C’s.

This summer one of the most hyped prospects in the draft is Spanish guard Ricky Rubio. Even though there have been rumors of trade talks between the Celtics and Memphis Grizzlies, who hold the second pick and could potentially draft Rubio, making a move for an international player in the first round would be a change in course for the Celtics.

“I think the international players, like the U.S. players, the best players have been picked,” President of Basketball Operations Danny Ainge said on Tuesday. “There's obviously a few each year that are very special players, potentially good and Ricky Rubio being the example this year of a guy that's got great potential and there's a lot of buzz about him, but he's still very young.”

Aside from Rubio, Ainge considers the other international prospects to be “more on the ordinary side.” He believes those players are best fit for teams looking to develop young talent overseas, as the Celtics did with 2008 second-round pick Semih Erden from Turkey.

"They could be drafted,” Ainge said. “Again, because a lot of teams won't have roster spots ... But I imagine there will be a lot of Europeans picked in the second round of this draft, just for that reason, to keep them over and try to find another Manu Ginobli or something like that in this draft."

Celtics international picks since 2000:

Semih Erden, Turkey
60th pick, 2008 Draft

The Celtics went for size when they drafted Semih Erden, a 6-11 center from Turkey who showed promise on the glass. Erden was still under contract with Fenerbache Ulker (Istanbul) when he was selected, and made an appearance in Boston with fellow draft picks J.R. Giddens and Bill Walker last July before returning to Turkey to play out the remaining year of his deal.

This season he averaged 6.6 points and 4.1 rebounds with Fenerbahce Ulker. Erden, 22, has been playing professional basketball in Turkey since 2003.

Darius Songalia, Lithuania
50th pick, 2002 Draft

Born in Lithuania, Darius Songalia attended high school in New Hampshire and played college basketball at Wake Forest University. Nonetheless, he is only the third internationally born player selected by the Celtics in the last 10 years. The C’s traded their draft rights to Songalia to the Sacramento Kings in exchange for their second round picks in 2003 and 2005, which they used to select Brandon Hunter and Orien Greene.

Songalia, who has been a member of the Washington Wizards since 2006, will reportedly be traded to the Minnesota Timberwolves.

Josip Sesar, Croatia
47th pick, 2000 Draft

The Celtics acquired the rights to Josip Sesar in a Draft Day trade with the Seattle SuperSonics. Sesar, a 6-6 shooting guard from Croatia, never appeared in a game for the Celtics. He returned to Europe where he has competed in the NLB League ABA (Adriatic Basketball Association) and Euroleague, among others according to his personal website. He is listed on the 2008-09 roster for BC Zrinjski Mik Company Mostrar (Bosnia).

Sesar was selected in the same draft in which the Celtics selected Jerome Moiso with the 11th overall pick. Moiso played in just 24 games with the Cs to Sesar's zero.
