The 2008-09 Boston Celtics season was identified by one number, 18, signifying the quest for the team’s next championship. While that figure was never attained, there were other landmark numbers this season.
1: Home games lost in Game 7
The Celtics were 3-0 in Game 7s since the acquisitions of Ray Allen and Kevin Garnett before losing to the Orlando Magic in the Eastern Conference Semifinals. They had defeated the Atlanta Hawks, Cleveland Cavaliers and Chicago Bulls by an average of 16 points dating back to the first round of the 2008 playoffs.
3: Postseason triple-doubles by Rajon Rondo
It only took Rajon Rondo nine games to post his third postseason triple-double, which he recorded in Game 2 against the Orlando Magic. Rondo tied Larry Bird for the franchise record of three triple-doubles in the playoffs, set in 1986.
4: Longest losing streak of the season
Despite being hampered by injuries, the Celtics’ longest losing streak only reached four games this season. At the start of January they lost to the New York Knicks, Charlotte Bobcats, Houston Rockets and Cleveland Cavaliers.
12: 30+-point performances by Paul Pierce
Even though he no longer has to do it all on his own, Paul Pierce can still put his teammates on his back when necessary. The Celtics were 10-2 this season when Pierce scored 30 points or more.
14: Opponents' postseason point differential without Kevin Garnett
The absence of Kevin Garnett caught up to the Celtics defense in the playoffs. They allowed 14 more points (102 ppg) in the 2009 postseason without KG than during their 2008 championship run with him on the court.
19: Longest winning streak of the season
From November 15 to December 23, the Celtics went on a commanding 19-game winning streak. The C’s outscored their opponents by an average of 107-93 during that stretch.
42: Wins when scoring 100+ points
The Celtics went 42-3 this season (.933) when scoring at least 100 points. They were 18-8 (.692) when their opponents’ score passed the mark.
44.4: Eddie House's franchise-record three-point shooting percentage
On the final night of the regular season, Eddie House (44.4% 3PG) shot six-for-nine from long range to break the Celtics’ single-season three-point shooting record set by Danny Ainge in 1987 (44.3%). House hit five of the treys in the fourth quarter in the Celtics victory over the Washington Wizards.
46: Average point differential between Celtics starters and reserves
Celtics starters averaged 73.3 points per game this season while the bench averaged just 27.6. The starters also outrebounded the reserves by nearly 17 boards per contest.
72: Three-point attempts by Rajon Rondo
It was no secret that opponents were leaving Rajon Rondo open early in his career, so he developed a jumper and gained confidence from behind the arc. Rondo attempted 72 treys compared to 39 last season.
95.2: Ray Allen's record-setting free throw percentage
Ray Allen broke a 50-year old Celtics record by shooting 95.2% (237-249) from the free throw line during the regular season. Bill Sharman set the previous record in 1959.
140: Total points scored by Stephon Marbury
Stephon Marbury had a reputation of being a selfish player when he signed with the Celtics in February. He proved the opposite to be true in Boston, scoring a total of 140 points in 37games (3.8 ppg).
3,535: Combined minutes played in the postseason
After 14 games, including four that went beyond regulation, the Celtics as a team played 3,535 minutes in the 2008 playoffs. The Cleveland Cavaliers, on the other hand, played only 1,920 through the first two rounds.
18,264: Average home crowd attendance
For the second consecutive season, the Celtics averaged a sellout crowd of 18,624 at the TD BankNorth Garden.
