The Game 1 altercation between the Celtics and Heat has left both teams with another objective besides containing their opponent — they’ll also have to contain their emotions in Tuesday’s Game 2.
On Sunday, the NBA issued a one-game suspension to Kevin Garnett and a fine to Quentin Richardson for their actions in Saturday’s scuffle. Even though it’s impossible to remove all emotion from basketball — especially in the playoffs — the teams will have to control those strong feelings on the court.
But how will the teams move past such a heated incident?
“You know, I was going to put some ‘Barney’ on, maybe tomorrow,” Doc Rivers laughed at practice on Sunday. “I mean, I don’t know, it’s a good question. We are who we are, but that’s not an excuse, if you know what I’m saying. We still have to understand the importance of everybody playing and staying on the floor.”
Players from both teams are already focused on moving past Saturday’s conflict. They shared how they plan on approaching Game 2 on Tuesday without being distracted from the emotions of Game 1.
HAVE CONTROL OVER THE SITUATION
Garnett has apologized to his teammates but said he does not regret his actions in Game 1. He believes emotions can help the Celtics, as long as they don’t spiral out of control.
“I think we need to play with emotion, to be honest with you,” Garnett said. “I think emotion is a sense of passion. Playing at home, [we] definitely have to defend home court. I think that’s important. I think we need to come out and play with that same energy. We know our schemes, we know what we’re doing, and continue to be aggressive.”
He added, “I wouldn’t say [emotions are] good or bad; it’s when you let your emotions get the best of you. I can say that. Situations to where you have to sort of bite down a little bit and understand what the situation is, in that sense. But it’s an emotional game, it’s a very, very high intensity game. Everybody’s playing with those same emotions. Both sides are playing fiery basketball, and it’s aggressive. So at some point you have to be in control of yourself.”
STICK WITH THE GAME PLAN
Tony Allen’s tough defense on Dwyane Wade was critical in Game 1. He understands the role of guarding Wade is too important to let emotions get in the way of his responsibilities.
“We’ve just got to focus on the little things, rebounding, not turning the ball over, help the helper, and just basically execute our stuff on offense,” Allen said.
KEEP LOOKING FORWARD
The Heat had expectations for themselves when they arrived in Boston. Jermaine O’Neal said they don’t want to let the incident — or their Game 1 loss — get in the way of reaching their goals.
“It’s over,” O’Neal said of the altercation. “I think it’s going to be an emotional series. We understood it’s going to be a long series. Our job was to come here and get one, if not two. Obviously we can’t get two now, so we’re still on schedule to try to do what we came here to do, and that’s to win one on their homecourt.”
STAY GROUNDED
Emotional playoff series are not anything new for Michael Finley. He has been in the league long enough to see his share of heated match ups, and understands the importance of staying grounded in these situations.
“It’s a playoffs series, and what I’ve learned over the years is, every game is different, every series is different,” Finley said. “Once you win one, the next one is even tougher. You’ve just got to stay humble in victory and don’t get too high with the highs and too lows with the lows. Just try to keep an even keel, especially emotionally.”
BE AWARE OF THE CONSEQUENCES
Michael Beasley seems to be the last player the Celtics have to worry about causing a problem on the court. Beasley may be the youngest player in the series, but he knows enough about the business to avoid getting caught up in an altercation.
“I love my money too much, to be completely honest,” he said. “You do anything, it’s a fine, and I don’t want to give away any money.”
