Paul Pierce was right about two things:
1. It didn’t matter if the Celtics won big just as long as they won at home.
2. If they held their opponent to less than 40 percent shooting and 100 points, they would come out on top.
On Wednesday night, they did both.
In their biggest win since January, the Celtics beat the Bobcats 104-80 at the TD Garden. (Click here for a complete recap.) The game was so comfortable for the C’s that even Gino made an appearance. It was just their second win in their last five home games, dating back to a Feb. 7 loss to the Magic.
After struggling with injuries and a depleted lineup, the victory was a total team effort. Only two of the starters scored in double digits, yet all but one player who took the court got on the scoreboard. The bench scored 46 points, including 16 from Nate Robinson. To put it into further perspective, the Celtics won by 24 with only three points from Ray Allen.
On the flip side, the C’s buckled down on defense and held the Bobcats to just 36 percent shooting, well within Pierce’s projected range for a win. The Bobcats also shot 0-for-9 from 3-point range on Wednesday, leaving them 0-for-18 from behind the arc at TD Garden this season.
A win over the sub-.500 Bobcats doesn’t mean the Celtics are in the clear from their inconsistencies this season. But this blowout was a step in the right direction for a team that desperately has to get back on track before the playoffs.
Here are three things we learned from this victory:
NATE FEELS AT HOME
Robinson was not about to waste any time. It took him less than 21 minutes to hit four 3-pointers, grab four rebounds, dish three assists, and make a pair of free throws.
“Nate is pure energy,” said Kevin Garnett. “I said that from Day 1 since he has been here. We hate to lose Eddie House, but not only is he pure energy, but he is good energy. He is almost like fresh air.”
While other players in the second unit have struggled to find their rhythm off the bench, Robinson came out swinging from the moment he stepped on the court.
He checked into the game with 1:42 left in the first quarter. A minute later, he hit two treys in a span of 29 seconds. That instant energy had been missing from the Celtics second unit.
“He fits right in with our team,” Garnett continued. “He is unselfish. We all knew that he could play, but his personality is what stands out most about him. He is a very respectable person, high energy. Like I said, I like the way he plays. We like the way he plays. He comes out and just puts it on the floor. He is the reason we turned the corner like we did. I think he took the momentum himself and ran with it.”
Added Doc Rivers, “He’s our x-factor in a lot of ways. I don’t know if we need him to play great to win, but I know when he plays great, it’s tough for us to lose.”
As for Robinson, he is feeling more comfortable in his new digs.
“The first couple times I was kind of nervous because I’m used to always being on the other side playing against you guys,” he admitted. “So it’s always been that kind of rivalry, Boston-New York. But now being at home here has definitely made it easier for me. The fans, they welcomed me with opens arms as well, so you’ve got to take your hat off to them. I’m just happy to be here and happy to be playing.”
WHAT A DIFFERENCE A HEALTHY TEAM MAKES
This season the Celtics (including players who have been traded) have missed over 120 games due to injuries. On Wednesday night, they finally had a healthy lineup. No flu’s, no torn ligaments, no sprains, just a roster of available players.
One of the biggest presences felt was Paul Pierce, who recently missed three games with a sprained thumb. The captain scored a game-high 27 points in less than 27 minutes (9-for-13 from the field, 4-for-6 on 3-pointers and 5-for-5 from the line) a day after scoring just nine points in his return.
“It’s just nice to get Paul going,” said Rivers. “You guys have seen him — hell, you’ve seen him more than me over the years. Paul, even coming off injury, doesn’t like having two in a row. And it’s funny — last night I jokingly said, ‘Well he’ll be better tomorrow.’ But he almost had no choice, you know, the way he struggled. But you knew he would be.”
Not only did Pierce bounce back, Garnett continued to get his looks at the basket. He shot 5-for-9 from the field (12 points) and scored in double digits for the eighth consecutive game. Garnett can feel himself building his rhythm and was happy to see his teammates doing the same.
“Paul has been banged up a little bit, so it is good to see him have a game like this,” he said. “Everybody is picking up their play. I am no different from that. I told you, I wanted to be a lot more aggressive second half for the year. I am personally going to have a nice rhythm going into the playoffs. I am taking one game at a time. As we get healthy, I think you will start to see a better team.”
‘IT’S A START’
Kendrick Perkins was quick to point out that the Celtics are now 2-0 in March. It’s a good start for a month in which they will play 15 more games after Wednesday. Nine of them will come at home.
The Celtics can only take things one game at a time, but the win over the Bobcats was a step in the right direction. With the win, the Celtics improved to 17-11 in Boston. They are 21-10 on the road.
“Well, it’s a start,” said Pierce. “We haven’t had a game like this. It’s been a while. I thought this was a good win. This is how we should come out in each and every game, at home especially. If we just played a little bit better at home, we would probably have the best record in the league from the way we have been playing on the road.
“This is the place that we have to start establishing ourselves and make it a place like in the past couple of years where teams don’t want to play here, especially going into the playoffs.”
