Shaquille O'Neal will not play in Game 2 of the Celtics first round playoff series with the Knicks. Doc Rivers said that team doctor Brian McKeon told him an hour before the team went through a light walkthrough that Shaq was a no-go. "Dr. McKeon said we’re not even going to put him on the floor," Rivers said. "We’re not even going to try it."
Jermaine O'Neal scored 12 points in 22 minutes in Game 1 and made several key defensive plays, but Rivers said his performance had no effect on Shaq's status. "Now is the time where if you can play you’re going to play. Shaq can’t play," Rivers said. "So obviously Jermaine playing well helps our team but as far as buying time, if you can play now you’re going to be on the floor."
