The Red Sox recalled left-hander Felix Doubront Friday and designated Dennys Reyes for assignment, one of two moves made to try and improve a bullpen that has struggled in the first six games of the season.
"It was obviously a pretty short look," said Terry Francona of the Sox stint for Reyes, who had a 16.20 ERA in his four appearances. "It's hard to have a lefty, one lefty, that wasn't throwing the ball over the plate. We love Doubront -- he wasn't ready to pitch when we left -- so I think getting Felix here is something we're excited about. I know it was a short leash with Dennys but we need to try and win some games."
Doubront was shut down for a couple of weeks in spring training with elbow tightness, which was a key factor in his starting the season with Triple-A Pawtucket, but Francona said he spoke to the 23-year-old and was told that he was "ready to go."
Matt Albers (strained lat) was also placed on the DL, and Alfredo Aceves was recalled.
