According to the Montreal Gazette, Montreal police are investigating Zdeno Chara's hit on Canadiens forward Max Pacioretty Tuesday night.
Quebec's Director of Criminal and Penal Prosecutions has advised the ministry of Public Security to look into the matter, with the Gazette noting that Thursday "the investigation will begin immediately."
Pacioretty is still in the hospital as a result of the hit, which sent him into the turnbuckle along the boards. He suffered a severe concussion on the play and fractured his fourth cervical vertebrae.
Hockey players have received criminal charges for things that have happened on the ice before. Jonathan Roy, son of former Canadiens/Avalanche goaltender Patrick Roy, was charged with assault after an on-ice fight in 2008.
