Golfer Brad Faxon, making an appearance on the Dennis & Callahan show Friday morning, said that NBA legend Michael Jordan will make an appearance at Tiger Woods' press conference Friday morning and that Woods' wife Elin will not be in attendance. Faxon said Notah Begay dropped out of this weekend's PGA tournament in Mexico to be with his former Stanford teammate at the press conference, adding, "I know Michael Jordan's going to be there. I know Elin is not going to be there. ... I think Tiger really wants some friends there. That's why this thing is really a mystery to me."
Woods invited only three golf writers, and Faxon, speaking via phone from the Mayakoba Classic at Riviera Maya-Cancun in Mexico, said, "I spoke to Jim McCabe and Doug Ferguson last night, and they were thinking about boycotting the whole thing," because they couldn't ask questions. And, in fact, the Golf Writers Association of America's board of directors voted overwhelming Thursday not to participate as pool reporters in the event.
Faxon said there is speculation that Woods will announce his return, but also some speculation that he could announce he is stepping away from the game. Either way, the Rhode Island resident said he hopes Woods will clear up the confusion about his situation. "It would be fantastic in this press conference if he laid out the entire timeline of what happened," Faxon said. "This has taken on a life of its own that's way beyond golf."
In terms of the reaction from fellow golfers, Faxon said: "There's a mixed bag of feelings between the players out here. There are some players that are mad and disappointed at how he's handled this and what he's done. David Duval would be one of those guys. ... On the opposite side would be Kenny Perry who says, 'Hey look, he just needs a big hug.' He's already gotten a few of those."
