Red Sox slugger David Ortiz joined the Dale & Holley show Friday morning from his charity golf tournament in the Dominican Republic. Asked how he felt about the Red Sox picking up his option for next season, he said: "I'm fine. Like I always say, I can't wait for the season to start. … I'm happy I'm going to be around the Boston fans once again."
Asked which free agent he'd like to see the Red Sox pursue, Ortiz said: "Besides signing Adrian [Beltre], I would go right after Carl Crawford. He would be a good third-hole hitter."
"This guy's unbelievable," Ortiz continued. "He's got so many weapons to hurt you, that he's just unbelievable. His speed, his defense, the way he hits —he can hit for power, he can hit just to get on base. There's so many ways to hurt you. This guy's a serious weapon, I'm telling you right now. … I can't believe he hasn't been signed by someone already. This is a serious weapon. This is a serious player. This is a six-tool player. … And the most important thing, this guy stays healthy and he works really hard. So, there's no way you can go wrong about this guy."
Ortiz said he was happy that the Sox re-signed catcher Jason Varitek. "I'm super happy about that," he said. "Tek is like a brother to me. ... Tek is on top of his game even when he is not playing. I think the Red Sox made a great move."
Ortiz' charity is having an auction, and the bidding closes Friday at midnight. Check davidortizchildrensfund.org for more information.
