Jaworski: Pats an incredibly different team

Speaking on the Dennis & Callahan Show, 'Monday Night Football' and ESPN football analyst Ron Jaworski talked about how impressed he was with Tom Brady and the Patriots' offense, and his concerns regarding New England's defense.

Jaworski said when comparing it to what he saw in New England's early-season loss to the Jets that the Pats are "an incredibly different football team." The former NFL quarterback suggested that the progression of the offense should come as no surprise.

"I would say [Bill] Belichick had a vision where his football team was going to be down the road," Jaworski said. "You could see the evolution of this football team and what was going on." The analyst called the acquisition of wide receiver a "stroke of brilliance."

Jaworski, however, said that the Patriots should have a good deal of concern regarding their defense, citing the fact that the Pats are last in the NFL in total possessions (113).

"When you watch this defense giving up to close to 400 yards, it's not typical of New England Patriots defense," said Jaworski, who is most concerned with the Pats' pass rush.

"I see all kinds of rotations. It's somewhat amazing what I see in terms of personnel packages. I don't think they have found themselves yet. So, I think, yes, there will be a problem as you move into the playoffs against teams with juggernaut offenses. You've got to have a defense. I know they've got turnovers at opportune times. They've made plays at opportune times. But I don't think you can give up 400 yards on an average and be a Super Bowl team."

Jaworski, who has released a book entitled, 'Games That Change the Game,' noted that Belichick's defensive game-plan in the Patriots' Super Bowl win over the Rams was the best he has ever seen.

Regarding the Jets, Jaworski said that since the loss of guard Alan Faneca New York has changed their running style, becoming less of a power team. He did note, however, that Rex Ryan's team first priority is to run the football. The analyst said that in regard to the upcoming meeting between the Pats and Jets, the most important thing to watch is how much pressure the Patriots are able to get on New York quarterback Mark Sanchez.

When talking about Tom Brady, Peyton Manning, Drew Brees, and Philip Rivers, Jaworski said, "This is the first time in a long time I've had four quarterbacks in the elite level."
