Speaking to The Dennis & Callahan Show, ESPN's Adam Schefter offered a warning regarding the Patriots' upcoming opponent, the injury-riddled Indianapolis Colts. "I look at them as a team as long as they have that quarterback [Peyton Manning] they have a chance," Schefter said. "THey're not as good, I don't think, as some of the other Colts teams in recent years, but that's probably as much due to injury as anything else."
Schefter also discussed the lack of buzz surrounding the Colts meeting with the Patriots, which usually serves as one of the marquee games of the entire NFL season.
"I think it's got upstaged by a number of other factors in the league," he said. "I think the explosion of Michael Vick has drawn so much attention. The controversy surrounding Donovan McNabb has drawn so much attention. It seems like we live in a world where controversy sells better than interesting. As intriguing as this match-up is, and you're talking about two of the great franchises in sports, you're talking about two of the greatest quarterbacks in the history of the game, you're talking about a lot of intriguing and elements in this whole thing, the factor of the matter... Last night I'm sitting here thinking about what we're going to talk about on SportsCenter this morning and I haven't talked about the Colts and Patriots all week."
Schefter, who said he believes the Colts would beat the Jets if the two teams played, believes there isn't any team that will "figure it all out" and become a dominant force heading into the NFL regular season's stretch drive.
"What I view is you're going to get a lot of teams who are going to win a lot of games, but I think we've seen in this league that it changes so much on a week to week basis," Schefter said. "One week ago the Giants were the best team in the NFL and they lost to the Cowboys. One week ago the Steelers are the best team in football and the Patriots humiliated them in Pittsburgh on their home field. This is going to continue to evolve as the season goes on."
As for Philadelphia quarterback Michael Vick, Schefter said the Eagles will absolutely keep the QB for next season. The ESPN columnist did suggest that Vick still isn't at the level of the elite quarterbacks of the NFL.
"He's been doing this all year long. This is not terribly unusual. This is what he's done. He's been incredible," Schefter said of Vick. "I'll still take [Tom] Brady and Manning. Vick is the flavor of the month, but Brady and Manning are the flavors of the decade."
