Red Sox leadoff hitter Jacoby Ellsbury doubled to open the bottom of the first inning of Wednesday's game against Chicago, and swiped third on the first pitch that White Sox starter Freddy Garcia threw to Dustin Pedroia. The steal -- on which Ellsbury had such a good jump that catcher A.J. Pierzynski did not offer a throw -- was Ellsbury's 55th of the year, making the 25-year-old the single-season Red Sox record holder for thefts.
Ellsbury had been in a tie with Tommy Harper, who stole 54 bags in 1973. The crowd celebrated the feat with a standing ovation.
