FOXBORO -- Laurence Maroney had a pair of touchdown runs and BenJarvus Green-Ellis ran in a score from six yards as the Patriots beat the defending Super Bowl champion New Orleans Saints, 27-24, at Gillette Stadium in the preseason opener for both teams.
After a first series that started at the Saints 19 but only resulted in a short run, two incompletions and a Steve Gostkowski field goal, Tom Brady looked very impressive in his next and final drive of the night. Brady completed 5-of-6 passes for 67 yards, leading the team on a 93-yard, 14-play scoring drive that ended with a BenJarvus Green-Ellis 6-yard touchdown run. Brady played for a total of 17 offensive snaps.
Other highlights of the night included the play of second-year receiver Julian Edelman. He caught six balls for 90 yards, including a 25-yard completion on the 93-yard scoring drive. Randy Moss caught three passes for 30 yards and rookie Devin McCourty had kickoff returns of 52 and 51 yards in the third quarter.
The Patriots did give up a 97-yard kickoff return to Larry Beavers for a Saints touchdown and reserves couldn't protect a 24-7 lead. After the Saints scored 17 straight points to tie the game, third-string rookie quarterback Zac Robinson found Darnell Jenkins for a 52-yard pitch and catch down the left sideline to set up Steve Gostkowski's 28-yard game-winning field goal with 53 seconds remaining in regulation.
