Gammons: Sox won't add bat

Hall of Fame baseball analyst Peter Gammons of NESN and the MLB Network joined The Big Show on Friday, offering up his thoughts on what the Red Sox and their competitors may do before Saturday's trade deadline. Though he stated he didn't think the team would acquire a bat for the outfield, Gammons noted that the team would likely look for bullpen arms.

"I don't think they're going to get the outfield bat that they'd like to get," Gammons said. "There was some talk today that once the Astros made that deal to get [Brett] Wallace to play first base they made it clear to everybody that they want to move Lance Berkman, who has not had a good year and really only can hit left-handed now. … Apparently that doesn't fit because he can't really play the outfield. I'm not really sure where Berkman's going, but my guess is they don't come up an outfield and they'll pick up a reliever or two. 

On the topic of relievers, Gammons said there wasn't one on the block that a team could have the utmost confidence in.

"There isn't a relief pitcher out there that you could say, 'This guy will have an ERA under 5.00 the last two months of the season,'" Gammons said. "I'd put Matt Capps right in that category.

"You can get lucky for two months. Qualls was great for the Astros in the playoffs in 2005," he later added. "He currently has the worst earned run average of any relief pitcher in baseball, but he still throws 95. He could go someplace -- Tampa, Boston, someplace -- and put together two good months pitching the sixth and seventh innings and you could be very happy with him."

As for the Yankees, Gammons said a fear existed in the AL East that New York could make the biggest splash on Saturday.

"The Tampa Bay people are absolutely convinced that one way or another there's going to be a huge deal with the Yankees and they're going to end up with Adam Dunn. I don't know if it will or not, but I would say if Adam Dunn's going anywhere, it would probably be to the Yankees."
