Red Sox shortstop Jed Lowrie was, as expected, recalled from Triple-A Pawtucket on Saturday morning and placed on Boston's 25-man roster. Lowrie is in the Sox starting lineup against the Toronto Blue Jays and hitting eighth. The 25-year-old switch-hitting shortstop hasn't played a game for the Sox since landing on the 15-day disabled list April 13 with a left wrist injury that required surgery. RHP Clay Buchholz was optioned back to Pawtucket to clear a spot for Lowrie on Boston's 25-man roster. Lowrie entered Saturday hitting .053 in 19 at bats for the Sox this season while attempting to play through pre-surgery wrist pain back in early April.
