Catcher Adalberto Ibarra, a Cuban defector with whom the Red Sox agreed in principle to a deal in April, is in Boston and took his physical on Monday. As long as the results do not reveal any physical issues, that would position him to sign officially with the Red Sox in the coming days and to be added to the 40-man roster, according to his agent, Edwin Mejia.
"He's taken [the physical]. We're waiting for the results. We're extremely optimistic that it's only a matter of time before he's with the Sox," said Mejia.
Ibarra and the Sox agreed in principle to a major league deal with a $1.5 million signing bonus, with the opportunity for the catcher to earn as much as $4.3 million over five years. He remained in the Dominican Republic over the last two months awaiting the processing of his visa application. That hurdle was cleared, positioning Ibarra to undergo his physical on Monday.
