In order to clear a roster spot for right-hander Ryan Dempster, the Red Sox designated right-hander Pedro Beato for assignment. The team acquired Beato from the Mets on Aug. 16 as the player to be named in the deal that sent Kelly Shoppach to New York. Beato went 1-0 with a 4.70 ERA in four games with seven strikeouts and three walks in 7 2/3 innings. The 26-year-old also appeared in seven games with the Mets in 2012, yielding five runs in 4 1/3 innings.
With the addition of Dempster and excision of Beato, the Red Sox 40-man roster remains full at 40 players.
