The Jets put up another offensive stinker Sunday, but they managed to pull out a 7-6 victory over the Cardinals that kept their slim playoff hopes alive. Quarterback Mark Sanchez was brutally heckled by Jets fans for his brutal play -- even after backup Greg McElroy entered the game late in the third quarter to loud cheers and threw a 1-yard touchdown pass.
"Well, you can definitely tell that the stadium was happy about it," defensive back Yeremiah Bell said.
"It's just something that I sensed, that I felt," coach Rex Ryan said. "When you're around this game long enough, you get that feeling that: You know what? I've seen enough, and it's time to make that change."
After the win, Jets players were hesitant to say too much about the QB controversy.
"It definitely energized us a little bit having the crowd behind us, but other than that, it was a coach’s decision,” receiver Stephen Hill said. “I’m here for both quarterbacks so I don’t have anything to say."
Sanchez acknowledged that, "From the get-go, from the first play, it just wasn't my day," and added: "I'm really happy for the team and really happy for Greg. He came in and played his butt off."
Meanwhile, injured Jets cornerback Darrelle Revis had a message for his teammates over the weekend: "Guys just need to shut up."
Talking to Newsday on Saturday while at a shopping mall in New Jersey where he was promoting his first signature training shoe, Revis said his teammates need to focus on the game instead of making headlines for their big mouths.
"Quit talking crazy to the media, especially involving your teammates," Revis said. "I think that's the worst, because when you do that, that's when it really gets divided. Because you don't know if you can trust your other teammate."
After Sunday's victory, the Jets are 3-6 since Revis suffered an ACL injury in Week 3 and 5-7 overall.
