Scott Atchison told WEEI.com Friday afternoon that the Red Sox have informed the 36-year-old reliever that they will not be tendering him a contract, making Atchison a free agent for a second straight season. The team later announced that they have not tendered contracts to Atchison, Rich Hill and Ryan Sweeney.
The team has until midnight to make a decision whether or not to tender contracts to the following 11 arbitration-eligible players -- Atchison, Alfredo Aceves, Hill, Andrew Miller, Franklin Morales, Sweeney, Jacoby Ellsbury, Daniel Bard, Craig Breslow, Andrew Bailey and Jarrod Saltalamacchia.
Atchison was non-tendered a year ago, choosing to re-sign with the Red Sox.
"I would like to stay in Boston," he said by phone, "but now we're going to have to see what's out there."
Atchison appeared in 42 games for the Red Sox, compiling a 1.58 ERA, while walking just nine batters in 51 1/3 innings.
