The Red Sox traded right-handed pitcher Zach Stewart to the Pirates in exchange for a player to be named later, the team announced Wednesday. Stewart, 26, had been designated for assignment on Nov. 20.
Stewart, acquired from the White Sox on June 24 in the Kevin Youkilis trade, went 0-2 for Boston, allowing 14 runs in 5 2/3 innings over two starts. He also made 11 regular-season starts for Triple-A Pawtucket, going 3-5 with a 3.94 ERA and 42 strikeouts and 14 walks.
Stewart, a third-round pick of the Reds in 2008, also played for the Blue Jays in 2011. He has a career record of 3-10 with a 6.82 ERA and 64 strikeouts in 103 innings.
