Right-hander Allen Webster, a key prospect in permitting the Red Sox blockbuster with the Dodgers in August, was the top prospect among six players added by Boston to its 40-man roster on Tuesday night for the purposes of protecting them from the Rule 5 draft. He was joined by fellow starting pitching prospect Steve Wright (a knuckleballer), reliever Alex Wilson, catchers Christian Vazquez and Dan Butler and outfielder Alex Hassan in the group of players whom the Sox elected to protect from next month's Rule 5 draft.
In order to create space for those players on the 40-man roster, the Sox designated five players for assignment: pitchers Zach Stewart, David Carpenter and Sandy Rosario, third baseman Danny Valencia and utility man Ivan De Jesus Jr. for assignment.
