Chung on M&M: Talib 'a playmaker'

Patriots safety Patrick Chung joined Mut & Merloni on Friday morning as the Patriots enjoy a bye week.

Chung didn’t play last week and had to watch the game from home as he didn’t travel to London. He said he wanted to be out there.

“I said I was going to try my hardest to get out there," Chung said. "I was working, man, it’s looking better. … There’s nothing I can do about it, got to just keep working tough and try to get out there.”

The Pats made a move to shore up their shaky secondary on Thursday by trading with the Buccaneers for Aqib Talib. Chung said Talib would be a good addition.

“He’s good," Chung said. "He’s a playmaker, and he’s a big guy, too. He’s a big corner, he has speed, he has range, if he can catch the ball, he’s a very good player. … It’s definitely going to help our defense, to have a physical corner. A guy that’s out there to tackle, jam receivers and mix up their routes, it’s definitely going to help our team. … He’s a good player, he’s going to help our team. Bill [Belichick] wouldn’t bring him here for no reason.”

Adding a new player midseason could change the dynamics of communication for the Patriots secondary, but Chung said the players have to just keep working at it as they always have.

“We've just got to do everything the exact same, now there’s just a new guy in the room, he’s going to have to pick up on it a little faster," Chung said. "I don’t think it’ll be a problem. He’s coming in here ready to play, ready to learn. So he can be on the field and help us."

The Patriots covered the Rams well on Sunday, holding them to seven points. Chung said a combination of factors went into the good defense.

“Mixture of things, just [the Rams] not taking shots, or everybody is covered or we make a play on the ball,” Chung said. “Every play had a different situation, I can’t say it’s one thing, it’s a mixture of things. It’s worked out for us.”

Chung talked about the advantage of having Devin McCourty on the team because of his flexibility.

“Depth is very good and versatility is very good, also," Chung said. "Whatever coach wants to do. Whatever he does, is definitely best for the team and is going to help the team win. … We've just got to fall out, play some football, and go from there."
