Red Sox Manager Terry Francona met with the media before the Red Sox start their series with the Marlins and said the following:
- On John Smoltz: "Once he comes back, hopefully there's no turning back and he pitches deep into October." The Manager went on to say "(He) will slot between Beckett and Lester.""He's been tremendous. He wants to help us win.""I don't know if it made a lot of sense to have his first or second start against the Braves...that's asking a bit much."
- On the current rotation: "Everyone stays on turn this week, then everyone but Wakefield gets an extra day of rest for the following turn." Francona went on to say that it "could be" a six-man rotation for a week or two. "That wouldn't be the worst thing for a short period of time."
- On Jed Lowrie: The Red Sox shortstop hit in Lowell on Monday and Tuesday, flies to Florida Wednesday, and then will play extended spring games on Thursday and Friday. Lowrie will then likely start a Triple-A assignment. Francona said that a week "might be a little quick."
