Lowell: No interest in Red Sox managing job

Mike Lowell, whose name has been surfaced as a possible managerial candidate for both the Marlins and Red Sox, said he has no interest in throwing his hat in the ring for any Major League Baseball managing position.

"If any team called me right now I would be extremely flattered, but it wouldn't be for me right now," Lowell said from his Miami-area home.

The 38-year-old spent the past season with his family, while occasionally doing work for the MLB Network. Despite overtures from some organizations, Lowell hasn't been employed by a major league club since retiring following the 2010 season.

"I have always thought in the future something on the field would really interest me, but I think if you're going to do it right you really need to dedicate a lot of time," he said. "There is time that needs to be dedicated to do the job right. For me in my life, in my situation right now, I'm really enjoying the freedom that I have. I think my baseball juices will be flowing sometime in the future, but for my family, where I am right now, it would be tough."

According to an MLB.com report late in the '12 season, Lowell's name had mentioned within the Marlins' organization as a possible replacement for Ozzie Guillen. The former third baseman had also been thought to be an alternative for the Red Sox if they chose to go the same route as the Cardinals and White Sox, who both hired managers with no managing experience.

"It's very flattering they considered me, even in a news report," Lowell said. "I do think the success of Mike Matheny and Robin Ventura shows if you're a baseball guy and you handle personalities well and you can be a leader of the clubhouse and the men you're putting together on the field, I think that margin of error shortens a lot. Now we're seeing most managers are former players. In the old days I think it was a little bit different. 

"I think it helps in my favor, but if I were to do it I would want to be part of the organization and know the ins and outs because it's not just at the big league level. If you're going to do this right you have to know what you have down in the system."
