Despite 13 points and nine assists from Rajon Rondo, the Celtics were on the losing end of a 97-91 score against Fenerbahce Ukler in Istanbul. Former Xavier star Romain Sato led FBU with 24 points, while Bo McCalebb added 21.
The early-season rust was evident, especially on the defensive end where the C's allowed FBU to shoot 51 percent in the first half. Turnovers (25, including five by Rondo) and defensive rebounding (12 offensive rebounds allowed) were also a concern.
There were several bright spots for the Celtics including the play of rookie Jared Sullinger, who had 16 points and 8 rebounds. He was in the first-half rotation while Chris Wilcox sat out with back spasms.
Jeff Green also played in his first game since the 2011 playoffs and scored 16 points in 26 minutes. Green dominated the fourth quarter and looked sharp and aggressive. He missed all of last season after undergoing heart surgery. The Celtics will travel to Milan where they will play EA7 Emporio Armani Milano on Sunday.
