Dustin Pedroia will undergo surgery on a torn ligament in his right pinky finger Tuesday in Arizona. The second baseman has been playing with the injury since July 29, when a ball damaged the finger while fielding a seventh-inning ground ball off the bat of New York's Mark Teixeira.
A pin will be placed in the finger by Dr. Donald Sheridan, who will take out the support after four weeks. The ligament proved to be a persistent problem throughout Pedroia's final 57 games, continuing to pop out. An MRI taken late last week revealed that surgery was needed.
Pedroia, who battled two separate thumb ailments throughout the 2012 season, went on to hit .324 with a .904 OPS after damaging the finger. He would miss only three games after suffering the injury.
No surgery is expected to be needed on Pedroia's broken left ring finger, which occurred in Baltimore last Sunday and kept him out of Monday's game at Yankee Stadium.
Pedroia finished the '12 season hitting .290 with 15 home runs, 20 stolen bases and a .797 OPS in 141 games.
