Red Sox starting pitcher Brad Penny drilled Alex Rodriguez with a 97 mph fastball in the middle of the back in the top of the first inning of Thursday's tilt between the Sox and Yankees. The pitch -- which came two pitches after Penny fired a 96 mph fastball more than a foot inside -- prompted the umpiring crew to warn both benches.
The drilling of Rodriguez may have come in retaliation for the fact that the Yankees have twice drilled Jason Bay in the last three contests between the teams: once on May 5, when Joba Chamberlain hit the Sox' cleanup hitter, and again on Tuesday, when reliever Jose Veras hit Bay.
