Mauro Gomez' ninth-inning triple plated both Jacoby Ellsbury and Cody Ross, breaking a 5-5 tie and propelling the Red Sox to an 8-5 victory over the Blue Jays at Rogers Centre in Toronto Friday night.
Gomez, who was one of three Red Sox to come away with a multiple-hit game, added an insurance run when he came in from third on Ryan Lavarnway's sacrifice fly.
It was Lavarnway's three-run home run in the fourth inning that initially tied the game for the Red Sox. The visitors would take a 5-3 lead in the fifth when Daniel Nava notched a two-run single.
Red Sox starter Daisuke Matsuzaka bounced back from one of the worst outings in his career, allowing four runs on three hits over 5 1/3 innings, striking out five and walking three.
Reliever Chris Carpenter picked up the win for the Red Sox, coming in with one on and one out with the game tied at 5-5. The righty would sandwich outs by Yunel Escobar and J.P. Arencibia around an intentional walk to Kelly Johnson, getting out of the jam.
Andrew Bailey struck out out two in picking up the save with a scoreless ninth inning.
