FOXBORO -- Patriots edge rusher Jermaine Cunningham knocked out Michael Vick with one hellacious hit to the ribs in the first quarter of Monday night's preseason game against the Eagles. The hit was so hard that Vick didn't play another snap and headed immediately to the locker room for x-Rays, which came back negative.
"It's football," Cunningham said. "Hits like that happen all the time."
Vick was knocked out of action last year with a non-displaced fracture in the ribs after a hit midway through the season in a home loss to the Cardinals in Philadelphia.
Cunningham appears bigger this season, as he is playing the outside linebacker spot and fighting for a roster spot on the team.
"It's football," Cunningham repeated. "It felt good to be out there playing football. It's still early in the year. We still have a couple of preseason games left. We just have to keep building.
"Every game I go out there feeling I have something to prove. That's just football, going out there and getting the person with the ball, running back, quarterback, receiver, whoever it is."
