In a text message to WEEI.com, Red Sox designated hitter David Ortiz wrote that he received clearance to remove the protective boot from his right foot Tuesday and will have his strained Achilles tendon re-evaluated Friday with the hope of swinging a bat this weekend.
Ortiz, who injured his Achilles July 16 while running home on Adrian Gonzalez' home run, is eligible to come off the 15-day disabled list Aug. 1. He did not accompany the team to Texas but will join the Sox when they play the Yankees in New York starting Friday.
During the stretch Ortiz has been out, the Red Sox are 24th in the major leagues in OPS (.669).
